assembly, the level wind and the winch drive. The
f r o n t winch assembly is a worm-gear, jaw-clutch,
h o r i z o n t a l - d r u m type with an i n t e r n a l a u t o m a t i c
b r a k e and drum drag brake. T h e automatic brake
is secured to the front end of the drive (worm gear)
shaft. The internally mounted drag brake is in
c o n s t a n t contact with the left end of the winch
drum.
b. S o m e f r o n t w i n c h e s h a v e a l e v e l w i n d i n g
device and a manually-operated cable tensioner
mounted on the front of the winch. The level wind
controls the cable so it winds around the drum in
t i g h t , even layers. Powcr for operating the winch
( w i n c h d r i v e ) c o m e s f r o m the vehicle's engine
through the power takeoff which is connected to the
winch by a propeller shaft. This shaft is secured to
t h e winch drive shaft by a shearpin.
