Clean spring (6) and inspect for distortion or cracked or collapsed coils. Replace if distorted or
cracked, or coil is collapsed.
6.
Using spring tester, test spring (6) strength. Replace if force to compress spring (6) to 2 in. (50.8 mm)
is less than 97 lb-ft (131.5 Nm).
7.
Clean and inspect all housings, covers, and cases for cracks, broken parts, or damaged threads.
Replace if cracked, broken, or threads are damaged.
8.
Clean and inspect drum shaft gear (7) for broken, chipped, or scored teeth. Replace if teeth are
broken, chipped, or scored.
NOTE
If drum shaft gear does not require replacement, go to task c.
9.
Using arbor press and mandrel, remove drum shaft (2) from drum shaft gear (7).
NOTE
Do not remove drum shaft keys if they are not damaged. If
removed, install new woodruff keys.
10.
Press shaft (2) into gear (7) until woodruff keys are centered in gear (7) hub. Use arbor press and
mandrel.
