4-123. POWER STEERING TESTS AND ADJUSTMENT (ROSS) (Contd)
1.
With thermometer in power steering pump reservoir (1), observe oil temperature. Temperature must
be 125-135F (52-57C).
2.
Observe oil flow rate indicated on flow meter. Flow rate should be 5.5-6.5 gpm (20.8-24.6 lpm).
CAUTION
Do not keep load valve closed for longer than 5 seconds to avoid
damaging pump. Closing load valve causes pump to operate at
relief pressure, resulting in rapidly increasing power steering oil
temperature.
3.
Close load shutoff valve (2) and observe pressure gauge and flow meter. Pressure should be 1,360-
1,440 psi (9,377-9,929 kPa). Flow rate should be zero.
4.
Immediately open load shutoff valve (2) and observe flow meter reading. Flow rate should return to
original reading of 5.5-6.5 gpm (20.8-24.6 lpm). If not, replace pump (3).
5.
Run engine at 1,200 rpm.
6.
Fully close load shutoff valve (2) and observe pressure gauge and flow meter readings. Observe
readings until steering pump (3) relief pressure is reached at 1,360-1,440 psi (9,377-9,939 kPa). Flow
rate should be zero.
7.
Open load shutoff valve (2) immediately. Flow rate should return to original reading of 5.5-6.5 gpm
(20.8-24.6 lpm).
