4-121. POWER STEERING ASSIST CYLINDER REPAIR (Contd)
WARNING
Drycleaning solvent is flammable and toxic. Do not use near an
open flame and always have a fire extinguisher nearby when
solvents are used. Use only in well-ventilated places, wear
protective clothing, and dispose of cleaning rags in approved
container. Failure to do this may result in injury to personnel
and/or damage to equipment.

Clean steering assist cylinder (8) and related parts with drycleaning solvent and let air-dry.
2.
Inspect steering assist cylinder (8), piston rod (15), piston (7), and cylinder gland (6) for scoring,
cracks, nicks, or breaks. Replace steering assist cylinder (8) if any parts are scored, cracked, nicked,
or broken.
3.
Inspect two ball sockets (10) and spring (9) for cracks and breaks. Replace ball sockets (10) and
spring (9) if broken or cracked.
4.
Inspect plug (11) for cracking and damaged threads. Replace plug (11) if cracked or threads are damaged.
NOTE
Coat all power steering assist cylinder components with clean
lubricating oil before assembly
Install spring (9), two ball sockets (10), and plug (11) in steering assist cylinder (8).

Install new backup ring (23) and O-ring (24) on cylinder gland (6).
3.
Install new gland O-ring (16), new gland backup ring (17), retaining rings (18) and (19), piston rod
seal (20), and retaining ring (21) in gland (6) with snapring (22).
4.
Install new packing ring (12) and new seal (13) on piston (7).
Install piston (7) on piston rod (15) with new locknut (14).
5.
Install piston (7) and piston rod (15) in steering assist cylinder (8).

Using care not to damage gland (6) and internal seals and threads, slide cylinder gland (6) over

piston rod (15) and into steering assist cylinder (8).
Install backup ring (5) in top of steering assist cylinder (8). Ensure backup ring (5) is seated in

groove in cylinder (8).
Install end plate (1), new plate seal (2), and end plate retainer (3) on cylinder gland (6) with three

screw-assembled washers (4).
