4-124. POWER STEERING TESTS AND ADJUSTMENT (SHEPPARD) (Contd)
d. Plunger Adjustment
Do not hold steering wheel in full-turn position for more than
5-10 seconds. Power steering pump damage could result.
NOTE
Assistant will rotate steering wheel.
Left side axle, axle stop and block shown. Right side is similar.
1.
With steel spacer block (1) in place between axle (2) and axle stop (3), rotate steering wheel (4) to
full left travel.
2.
Observe that pitman arm (5) rotates clockwise.
NOTE
Turning plungers IN decreases power-assisted turning angle;
turning plungers OUT increases power-assisted turning angle.
3.
Turn rear plunger (8) of steering gear (7) clockwise until high-pressure hiss is heard. Pressure gauge
must show 200-400 psi (1,379-2,785 kPa) pressure drop.
4.
With steel spacer block (1) in place between axle (2) and axle stop (3), rotate steering wheel (4) to
full right direction.
5.
Observe that pitman arm (5) rotates counterclockwise.
NOTE
Turning plungers IN decreases power-assisted turning angle;
turning plungers OUT increases power-assisted turning angle.
6.
Turn front plunger (6) of steering gear (7) counterclockwise until high-pressure hiss is heard.
Pressure gauge must show 200-400 psi (1,379-2,758 kPa) pressure drop.
