If task is being performed while engine is in vehicle,

a. Checking Plunger Free Travel
WARNING
If task is being performed while engine is in vehicle, ensure fuel
shutoff handle is pulled and battery ground cables are disconnected
to prevent engine starting. Failure to do this may result in injury
to personnel.
CAUTION
This procedure is for non-top stop injectors. It is used to prevent
excessive loading of the injector actuating systems and possible
failure.
1.
Loosen adjusting screw (2) and locknut (3) on injector rocker levers (4).
2.
Install dial indicator, fixture, and extension arm on housing (6) at water manifold (1) side.
3.
Position dial indicator extension arm on top of injector plunger (5) and set dial to zero.

Using engine barring tool to rotate crankshaft, rotate engine and record the total free travel amount
of each plunger (5). If plunger (5) free travel exceeds 0.206 in. (5.23 mm) on any cylinder, the torque

If free travel of all injector plungers (5) checks within limits, reset dial indicator on No. 3 cylinder.
b. Injector and Valve Adjustments
NOTE
l Before adjusting injectors and valves, check whether rocker
housings are cast iron or aluminum so correct clearance setting
tolerances are used.
