Table 4-1. Mechanical Troubleshooting (Contd).
MALFUNCTION
TEST OR INSPECTION
CORRECTIVE ACTION
c. Ensure front and rear wheels are chocked. Apply parking and service brakes.
d. Place transmission gearshift lever in DRIVE position, press accelerator to floor, and
record time it takes engine to reach 1,450-1,550 rpm.
CAUTION
Stop engine stall test if engine oil temperature exceeds 250F
(121C) or transmission oil temperature exceeds 290F (143C) or
damage to engine may result.
e. If engine does not reach limits within 20 seconds, perform FF152 fuel pump adjustment
(para. 4-57).
f. Place transmission gearshift lever in NEUTRAL position, raise and maintain engine
speed at 1,000 rpm to allow engine and transmission oil to cool.
END OF TESTING!
7. LOW OIL PRESSURE
Check engine oil pressure with pressure gauge.
a. If pump pressure is low, replace oil pump (para. 4-21 or 4-49).
b. If pump pressure is correct at oil pump, camshaft and crankshaft bearings are worn.
END OF TESTING!
8. CONTAMINATED ENGINE OIL
Step 1. If fuel is present in engine oil, adjust or replace fuel injectors (para. 4-33, 4-55, or 4-56).
Step 2. If coolant is present in engine oil:
a. Check fuel pump for damage.
NOTE
pressure. A leak in oil cooler will show oil in coolant. However,
after engine is shut down, pressure in coolant system will cause
coolant to leak into engine oil.
b. Check cylinder head for loose or missing expansion plugs.
If loose or missing, replace expansion plugs as necessary (para. 4-12).
c. Check cylinder head gasket for cracks and damage.
If cracked or damaged, replace cylinder head gasket (para. 4-12 or 4-41).
d. Check cylinder head for cracked coolant passages.
If coolant passages are cracked, replace cylinder head (para. 4-12 or 4-41).
e. Check cylinder liners for cracks.
If cracked, replace cylinder liners. Notify General Support maintenance.
f. Check engine block for cracked water passages.
If cracked, replace engine block (para. 5-7 or 5-28).
