3-460. FRONT HUBS REPAIR (Contd)
1.
Using bearing punch, remove outer bearing cup (4) from hub (5) by tapping alternately on outer
edge of cup (4). Discard outer bearing cup (4).

Using bearing punch, remove inner bearing cup (1) from hub (5) by tapping alternately on outer
edge of cup (1). Discard inner bearing cup (1).
3.
Remove plastic sleeve (2) from hub (5) by splitting and prying out of hub (5). Discard plastic sleeve (2).
NOTE
Bearing and bearing cup must be replaced as a match set.
4.
Install new outer bearing cup (4) in hub (5). Ensure outer bearing cup (4) is seated properly.
5.
Install new plastic sleeve (2) on hub (5).
6.
Install new inner bearing cup (1) in hub (5). Ensure inner bearing cup (1) is seated properly.
NOTE
q Perform steps 7 and 8 if stud failed inspection.
q Use left-hand threaded studs for hubs mounted on the left-hand
side of the vehicle, and right-hand threaded studs for hubs
mounted on the right side of the vehicle.
7.
Remove damaged studs (3) from hub (5). Discard studs (3).
8.
Install new studs (3) on hub (5), as required.
9.
Using abrasive cloth, remove rust from seal surface of spindle (7).
10.
Disconnect air line (6) from steering knuckle (8).
WARNING
Eyeshields must be worn when cleaning with compressed air.
Compressed air source will not exceed 30 psi (207 kPa). Failure to
do so may result in injury to personnel.
11.
Using external air source, blow dirt and debris from surface of spindle (7) by forcing air thorough
steering knuckle (8).
WARNING
Drycleaning solvent is flammable and toxic. Do not use near an
open flame and always have a fire extinguisher nearby when
solvents are used. Use only in well-ventilated places, wear
protective clothing, and dispose of cleaning rags in approved
container. Failure to do this will result in injury to personnel
and/or damage to equipment.
12.
Clean entire surface of spindle (7) with drycleaning solvent,

Connect air line (6) to steering knuckle (8).
CAUTION
Avoid filing too deeply into seal surface of spindle. Excessive filing
may result in permanent damage to spindle.
14.
Remove deep scratches by carefully filing seal surface of spindle (7) in a circular motion.
15.
Using abrasive cloth, remove light surface scratches from seal surface of spindle (7).
NOTE
It is unnecessary to remove the circular depression of a groove;
only the raised portion or lip.
