4-118. STEERING GEAR (SHEPPARD) AND MOUNTING BRACKET REPLACEMENT (Contd)
CAUTION
Cap or plug all openings immediately after disconnecting lines
and hoses to prevent contamination. Failure to do so may result
in steering system damage.
NOTE
Have container ready to catch oil from disconnected lines.
Tag all hydraulic lines and fittings for installation.
Disconnect oil pressure line (4) and oil return line (9) from adapter elbow (3) and adapter (8).

Disconnect assist cylinder pressure lines (14) and (16) from adapter elbow (15) and elbow (13).

Remove adapter elbow (3) and adapter (8) from steering gear (6).

Remove O-rings (5) and (7) from adapter elbow (3) and adapter (8). Discard O-rings (5) and (7).
NOTE
Perform steps 10 through 12 if old steering gear is to be reused.
Remove elbow (1) and adapter elbow (15) from front of steering gear (6).

Remove elbow (13), line (12), and adapter (11) from bottom rear of steering gear (6).

Remove O-rings (2) and (10) from elbow (1) and adapter (11). Discard O-rings (2) and (10).

NOTE
Assistant will help with stop 13.

Remove four locknuts (17), washers (18), screws (21), steering gear (6), and mounting plate (20)
from left frame rail (23). Discard locknuts (17).
Remove four locknuts (24), screws (22), and mounting bracket (19) from left frame rail (23). Discard

locknuts (24).

Install mounting bracket (19) on left frame rail (23) with four screws (22) and new locknuts (24). Do
not tighten locknuts (24).

Install mounting plate (20) and steering gear (6) housing on left frame rail (23) and mounting
bracket (19) with four screws (21), washers (18), and new locknuts (17). Tighten locknuts (17)
260-280 lb-ft (353-380 Nm).

Tighten locknuts (24) 60-70 lb-ft (81-85 Nm).
NOTE
Perform steps 4,5, and 6 if old steering gear is to be installed.

Install new O-rings (2) and (10) on elbow (1) and adapter (11).
Install elbow (1) and adapter elbow (16) on steering gear (6).

Install adapter (11), line (12), and elbow (13) on steering gear (6).
Install new O-rings (6) and (7) on adapter elbow (3) and adapter (8).

Install adapter elbow (3) and adapter (8) on steering gear (6).

NOTE
Wrap male pipe threads with antiseize tape before installation.
Connect assist cylinder pressure lines (14) and (16) to elbow (13) and adapter elbow (15).

Connect oil return line (9) and oil pressure line (4) to adapter (8) and adapter elbow (3).
