4-100. FRONT AND REAR AXLE CARRIER DIFFERENTIAL MAINTENANCE (Contd)
1.
Using wire brush and drycleaning solvent, clean sealing compound from threads of mounting
studs (6).
2.
Inspect mating surfacer of differential flange (1) and axle housing (6) for nicks, burrs, and cracks,
Remove any light burring with crocus cloth. Replace differential flange (1) or axle housing (6) if
cracked, nicked, or heavily burred.
3.
Inspect mounting studs (6) for bends or damaged threads. Replace mounting studs (6) if bent or
threads are damaged.
NOTE
Differential flange and axle housing mating surfaces must be
absolutely clean before applying sealing compound.

Apply generous but even amount of sealing compound around mating surfaces of differential
flange (1), axle housing (5), and threads of mounting studs (6).
2.
Attach chain and lifting device to carrier assembly (2),
WARNING
All personnel must stand clear during lifting operations. A snapped
cable, or swinging or shifting load, may result in injury to personnel.
CAUTION
When installing carrier differential on axle housing, use care
not to damage mounting studs. Direct assistant to guide carrier
differential into axle housing.
3.
Position carrier assembly (2) on axle housing (5) and install eighteen washers (4) and
nuts (3). Tighten nuts (3) 160-205 lb-ft (217-278 Nm).
4.
Remove lifting device and chain from carrier assembly (2).
FOLLOW-ON TASKS:
Install front axle shafts (para. 3-154).
Fill differential carrier to proper oil level (LO 9-2320-272-12).
Start engine (TM 9-2320-272-10) and road test vehicle.
