4-71. TRANSMISSION REPLACEMENT (IN-VEHICLE) (Contd)
NOTE
Use engine barring tool to rotate engine crankshaft when
l
aligning flywheel to converter screw holes.
l The use of shim stock tube in torque converter access hole
prevents converter screw from falling down behind flywheel. A
loose screw may cause a lockup condition, preventing
crankshaft rotation required to install remaining screws.
Using engine barring tool, rotate crankshaft until screw holes in converter (8) and flywheel (1) align
11.
with access hole (7).
Roll shim stock (6) into tube form and size to fit diameter of access hole (7). Insert shim stock (6) in
12.
access hole (7) and position over screw hole against flywheel (1).
Install twelve screws (5) on flywheel (1) and converter (8) in the same manner. Tighten screws (5)
13.
41-49 lb-ft (56-66 Nlm).
Remove shim stock (6) from access hole (7).
14.
Install new gasket (2) and cover plate (3) on flywheel housing (9) with two screws (4). Tighten
15.
screws (4) 5-8 lb-ft (7-11 Nlm).
Connect oil cooler filter-to-transmission supply hose (10) to lubrication valve adapter (13) on
16.
transmission (11).
NOTE
Perform step 17 for vehicles equipped with transmission PTO.
Connect PTO oil return hose (12) to lubrication valve adapter (13) on transmission (11).
17.
18.
Connect transmission-to-oil cooler return hose (14) to temperature transmitter adapter (15) on
transmission (11).
19.
Install front axle propeller shaft (19) on transfer case flange (16) with eight screws (17) and new
locknuts (18). Tighten locknuts (18) 32-40 lb-ft (43-54 Nlm).
