4-58. TURBOCHARGER MAINTENANCE (Contd)
1.
For general cleaning instructions, refer to para. 2-14.
2.
For general inspection instructions, refer to para. 2-15.
3.
Inspect thrust collar (3) for nicks and scratches. If nicked or scratched, replace thrust collar (3).
4.
Using abrasive cloth, remove carbon build up from turbine housing (12) and polish bearing surface
on turbine shaft (1).
5.
Inspect turbine shaft (1) for wear. Measure outside diameter of bearing surfaces. If outside diameter
is less than 0.432 in. (10.97 mm), replace turbine shaft (1).
6.
Inspect compressor housing (4) for cracks and excessive wear. If cracked or worn, replace
Coat new split ring with clean lubricating oil
1.
Install new split ring (13) in groove on turbine shaft (1).
2.
Install heat shield (14) on turbine shaft (1).
Lubricate new bearing with clean lubricating oil.
3.
Install two new bearings (11) and four new retaining rings (9) in bearing housing (10). Ensure
beveled side of retaining rings (9) face bearings (11).
4.
Install bearing housing (10) on turbine shaft (1). Rotate bearing housing (10) and press downward
to seat split ring (13) on turbine shaft (1).
Turbocharger balance is very important. Check and recheck
balance marks during assembly. An unbalanced turbocharger can
result in damage to engine components.
5.
Align scribed mark on thrust collar (3) with balance mark on turbine shaft (1).
6.
Install thrust collar (3) on turbine shaft (1).
Lubricate new thrust bearing with clean lubricating oil.
7.
Install new thrust bearing (15) into bearing housing (10) with three screws (8). Tighten screws (8)
40 lb-in. (4.5 Nm).
8.
Install oil baffle (16) into bearing housing (10).
Perform step 9 so scribed line on oil slinger is visible when oil
slinger is installed on turbine shaft.
9.
Using scriber, scribe a line on top of oil slinger (2).
10.
Install new split ring (7) on oil slinger (2).
