4-16. FLYWHEEL HOUSING MAINTENANCE (Contd)
c. Installation
1.
Install new camshaft bore cork gasket (1) in flywheel housing (2).
NOTE
Perform step 2 when installing new flywheel housing.
Install two dowel pins (8) in engine block (3).
2.
3.
Install flywheel housing (2) over dowel pins (8) and seat against engine block (3).
Install nine packings (4), washers (5), new lockwashers (6), and screws (7) on flywheel housing (2)
4.
and finger-tighten screws (7).
NOTE
The flywheel bore must be centered to crankshaft rotation.
Follow steps 5 through 18, using a dial indicator with dial
gauge attachment.
Attach dial indicator attachment (10) to flange of crankshaft (9) and position dial indicator plunger
5.
against bore face (11).
Mark flywheel housing (2) with chalk marks at 12, 3, 6, and 9 o'clock positions and position dial
6.
indicator plunger at 3 o'clock position by rotating crankshaft (9). Set dial indicator to zero.
NOTE
Perform steps 7 and 8 to check flywheel housing vertical runout.
Rotate crankshaft (9) from 3 o'clock through 6 o'clock to 9 o'clock position. Record highest reading.
7.
Rotate crankshaft (9) from 9 o'clock through 12 o'clock and back to 3 o'clock position. Record highest
8.
reading. The highest reading determines the up or down direction the flywheel housing (2) must be
adjusted.
NOTE
Perform steps 9 through 12 to adjust flywheel housing vertical
runout.
Rotate crankshaft (9) and dial indicator attachment (10) to point on bore face (11) where highest
9.
reading was recorded.
10.
Set dial indicator to read one-half of total highest reading and slightly loosen flywheel housing
mounting screws (12).
Using a soft-faced hammer, carefully tap flywheel housing (2) opposite the dial indicator until dial
11.
indicator reads zero.
12.
Once dial indicator reads zero, tighten flywheel housing mounting screws (12) finger-tight. Flywheel
housing (2) is now centered vertically. Do not remove dial indicator.
NOTE
Perform steps 13 through 15 to check flywheel housing horizontal
runout.
13.
Rotate crankshaft (9) so dial indicator is positioned at 12 o'clock, Set dial indicator to zero.
14.
Rotate crankshaft (9) and check readings at 3 o'clock and 6 o'clock positions. Record highest
reading.
Rotate crankshaft (9) and check reading at 9 o'clock and back to 12 o'clock position. Record highest
15.
reading. The highest reading recorded will indicate the direction the flywheel housing (2) must be
moved to obtain correct alignment center.
