b. Cleaning and Inspection

Inspect handle (1), plunger rack latch (3), pinion gear (6), stud (7), surface of fifth wheel housing (8),
two coupler jaws (11), compression arm (14), and two bushings (15) for grooves, breaks, cracks, cuts,
bends, stripped threads, and damaged gear teeth. Replace damaged part(s).

Inspect springs (2), (5), (12), and (13) for bends, breaks, collapsed coils, and correct spring lengths.
Refer to table 4-10, Fifth Wheel Spring Free Length, for measurements. Replace damaged or worn
part(s).

Inspect plunger rack (4), pivot pin (9), and cam (10) for wear. Refer to table 4-11, Fifth Wheel Wear
Limits/Tolerances, for measurements. Replace damaged or worn part(s).
