4-126. POWER STEERING PUMP AND RESERVOIR (M939/A1) REPAIR (Contd)
c. Cleaning and Inspection
WARNING
Drycleaning solvent is flammable and toxic. Do not use near an
open flame and always have a fire extinguisher nearby when
solvents are used. Use only in well-ventilated places, wear
protective clothing, and dispose of cleaning rags in approved
container. Failure to do this may result in injury to personnel
and/or damage to equipment.
1.
Clean pump base (7), reservoir (3), and filter breather (2) with drycleaning solvent. Dry with rag.
2.
Inspect pump base (7) for cracks and shaft (16) for burned condition. Replace pump base (7) if
cracked or if shaft (16) is burned.
3.
Inspect mounting studs (5) for stripped threads. Replace mounting studs (5) if threads are stripped.
4.
Inspect reservoir (3) for cracks. Replace reservoir (3) if cracked.
d. Assembly
1.
Install filter breather (2) on reservoir (3).
2.
Install new washer (20), new oil filter (19), and new spring (18) in reservoir (3). Position spring (18)
to recess in reservoir (3).
3.
Place power steering pump bracket (17) in vise.
Install pump base (7) on pump bracket (17) with three new lockwashers (15) and screws (14).
4.
Tighten screws (14) 25-31 lb-ft (34-42 Nm).
Install new O-ring (8) and new outlet adapter (9) in pump base (7). Tighten outlet adapter (9)
5.
30-45 lb-ft (41-61 Nm).
Install new pump base O-ring (6) on pump base (7).
6.
Install two mounting studs (5) in pump base (7). Tighten studs (5) 12-120 lb-in. (1-14 Nm).
7.
Install two new sealing washers (4) on two mounting studs (5).
8.
Install reservoir (3) over mounting studs (5) and on pump base (7) with two new locknuts (21).
9.
Install hook chain and cap (1) on reservoir (3).
10.
Place new woodruff key (10) in shaft (16) and install pulley (11) on shaft (16) with washer (13) and

new springtite screw (12). Tighten screw (12) 18 lb-ft (24 Nm).
Remove power steering pump (23) and pump bracket (17) from vise.
12.
e. Installation
1.
Install power steering pump (23) and bracket (17) on engine bracket (27) with two washers (26),
new lockwashers (25), and screws (24). Do not tighten screws (24).
2.
Align pump bracket (17) on adjusting link (31) and install with washer (29), screw (32), washer (29),
and new locknut (28). Do not tighten locknut (28).
3.
Place two drivebelts (30) around pulley (11).
4.
Connect power steering pressure hose (33) to adapter (9).
5.
Connect hose (34) to inlet tube (22) and tighten clamp (35).
