4-120. STEERING GEAR (SHEPPARD) REPAIR (Contd)
NOTE
Coat all seals and O-rings with GAA grease before assembly.
Press bearing (2) into bore of steering gear housing (5).
1.
Install new oil seal (3) in groove (4) of housing (5).

Install bearing (2) in output shaft cover (1).
3.
Install valve (22) and two new reversing springs (13) in piston (18) as follows:

a. Place springs (13) on long nose (12) of valve (22).
b. Hold piston (18) with large opening down.
c. Align slot (21) in valve (22) with positioning pin hole (15) in piston (18) and insert valve (22) up
into piston (18) until reversing springs (13) contact internal adjusting nut (14).
d. Turn piston (18) over.
Install new O-ring (16) on new positioning pin (17).

Install positioning pin (17) in piston (18) with nose of positioning pin (17) in slot (21) of valve (22).

NOTE
Only move valve a small distance when checking end free play.
Do not allow reversing springs to come off nose of valve.
Adjust positioning pin (17) until there is no radial free play, but valve (22) can move in bore of
