4-119. STEERING GEAR (ROSS) REPAIR (Contd)
WARNING
Drycleaning solvent is flammable and toxic. Do not use near an
open flame and always have a fire extinguisher nearby when
solvents used. Use only in well-ventilated places, wear
protective clothing, and dispose of cleaning rags in approved
container. Failure to do this may result in injury to personnel
and/or damage to equipment.
Compressed air source will not exceed 30 psi (207 kPa). When
cleaning with compressed air, eyeshields must be worn. Failure
to wear eyeshields may result in injury to personnel.

Clean all steering gear components with drycleaning solvent and dry with compressed air.
NOTE
Light polished areas of steering gear components indicate normal
wear.

Inspect bearing areas and tooth surfaces of sector shaft (3) and side cover (1) for pitting. Replace
sector shaft (3) and side cover (1) if pitted.

Inspect roller bearings (2) in side cover (1) for pitting and scoring. Replace side cover (1) if roller

Inspect valve housing thrust bearing (6) and two thrust washers (5) for pitting and scoring. Replace
thrust bearing (6) if pitted or scored

Inspect rack piston (9) for broken or missing teeth (10). Replace rack piston (9) if teeth (10) are
broken or missing.

Inspect wormshaft (8) for dents and chipping. Replace wormshaft (8) if dented or chipped.
7.
Inspect groove (7) in wormshaft (8) for chipping. Replace wormshaft (8) if grooves (7) are chipped.
8.
Inspect gear housing (4) for cracks, scored bore, or damage. Replace gear housing (4) if cracked, bore
is scored, or gear housing (4) is otherwise damaged.
