Remove dust seal plate (4) and seal (3) from steering knuckle (7).

Remove steering knuckle (7) from axle kingpins (2) and (5).
b. Cleaning and Inspection

For general cleaning instructions, refer to para. 2-14.

Inspect steering knuckle (7), lower plate (12), upper sleeve (10), and lower sleeve (11) for cracks and
scores. Replace part (s) if cracked or scored.
4.
Measure bearing inside diameter of upper and lower sleeves (10) and (11) for wear. If inside
diameter is more than 1.505 in. (38.23 mm), replace sleeve (10) or (11).
5.
Inspect studs (1) and (6) for stripped threads. Replace studs (1) or (6) if threads are stripped.
6.
Inspect stop screw (8) for bends. Replace stop screw (8) if bent.
NOTE
l Perform steps 7 and 8 if replacing with new stop screw.
l Perform steps 9 through 11 if replacing with new sleeve
bearings. Steps to replace sleeve bearings are the same for
upper and lower sleeves.

Break weld and remove stop screw (8) and jamnut (9) from steering knuckle (7). Discard stop
screw (8) and jamnut (9).
8.
Install new stop screw (8) and new jamnut (9) on steering knuckle (7). Do not weld.
9.
Using arbor press, remove sleeve bearing (14) from sleeve (13). Discard sleeve bearing (14).
10.
Using arbor press, install new sleeve bearing (14) in sleeve (13).
11.
Using burnisher, burnish inside diameter of sleeve bearing (14) to 1.500 in. (38.1 mm).
