4-55. FUEL INJECTOR MAINTENANCE (Contd)
Injector needle valve and nozzle are a matched pair. Do not
interchange. Do not touch internal parts unless hands are
moistened with diesel fuel or damage to equipment may result.
6.
Remove injector nozzle (2) and needle valve (7) from intermediate plate (6).
7.
Place injector nozzle (2) and needle valve (7) in clean diesel fuel.
8.
Remove intermediate plate (6) from injector sleeve (3).
9.
Place intermediate plate (6) in clean diesel fuel.
When removing injector, keep injector in upward position. This
will keep pressure spindle, pressure spring, and shim from falling
out of injector.
10.
Remove injector (4) from injector clamp (5).
11.
Tip injector (4) into hand and remove pressure spindle (8), pressure spring (10) and shim (9) from
injector (4).
12.
Remove injector sleeve (3) from injector (4). Discard injector sleeve (3).
c. Cleaning and Inspection
1.
Inspect nozzle nut (1) for damaged threads. Replace nozzle nut (1) if damaged.
2.
Using 0.0001.in. (0.0025-mm) cleaning needle from cleaning kit, clean injector nozzle
spray holes (11) on injector nozzle (2).
Drycleaning solvent is flammable and toxic. Do not use near open
flame and always have a fire extinguisher nearby when solvents are
used. Use only in well-ventilated places, wear protective clothing, and
dispose of cleaning rags in approved container. Failure to do this may
result in injury or death to personnel and/or damage to equipment.
Clean residue from injector nozzle (2) with drycleaning solvent and dip in clean diesel fuel.
3.
For cleaning purposes, dip scraper and hardwood in clean diesel fuel.
Using
scraper from cleaning kit, clean nozzle seat (13) on injector nozzle (2).
4.
Using
hardwood from cleaning kit, polish exterior of nozzle seat (13) on injector nozzle (2).
5.
Using
scraper from cleaning kit, clean interior ring groove (12) on injector nozzle (2).
6.
7.
Using
brass brush from cleaning kit, clean needle valve (7).
Pressure shoulder of needle valve will normally have a machined
appearance.
Inspect tip of needle valve (7) for excessive wear and erosion. If worn or eroded, replace injector (4).
8.
Perform steps 8 through 10 to check needle valve and injector
nozzle alignment,
Dip needle valve (7) in clean diesel fuel and insert into injector nozzle (2) until seated.
9.
Pull needle valve (7) one third of the way out of injector nozzle (2).
10.
Needle valve (7) must slide back into injector nozzle (2) under its own weight. If needle valve (7)
11.
does not slide back into injector nozzle (2), replace injector (4).
